The colour scheme is excellently rendered too, with vibrant tones and generally rich, deep blacks - notwithstanding a little of that Nolan-esque grey he goes for in favour of resolutely inky blacks. To stop this devious new menace — Batman's most personal and vicious enemy yet — he will have to use every high-tech weapon in his arsenal and confront everything he believes. Low frequencies were impressive, as Batman films often feature that deep rumble of the Batmobile’s engine (or Christian Bale’s Batvoice), but just as joyous on the ears was the variable whine of the Batpod on the mid- and high-ranges. Without spoiling anything, the plot can perhaps best be described as a psychological dissection of the nature of Good and Evil, and the perilously fine line that often separates the two. I actually like the aspect ratio switching, but there were times I almost wished the whole film was shot with the IMAX camera.

The training scenes in the mountain early on look nice and show some clear upgrades in detail and color depth and that’s true for any brightly lit scene. Indeed, on reflection, it's ironic to note that quite so many of Nolan's films make for demo material on the aural front even though none of them implement immersive HD audio tracks. You can analyze every scene and pick out the upgrades, but for me, the differences popped in any scene in the cave/hole Bruce Wayne was trapped in.The front and rear sound fields are integrated with precision which enables a seamless transference during panning sequences. Oldman underplays the role to perfection, never allowing the over-the-top-Oldman of past performances to leech into the character. The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker (Heath Ledger), who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. Edge enhancement, and there is a noticeable amount of edge enhancement and DNR during the 35mm scenes, is mostly apparent during dimly or softly lit sequences. It is Alfred who understands just what the Joker is all about, and he capably warns his master from being consumed in attempting to capture such a completely irrational psychopath.

The video also features enhanced color and contrast via the HDR10 specification (viewable on supporting 4k HDR TVs). He grounds Jim in reality as a family man who takes his job seriously and wants to lift Gotham from the quagmire of corruption into which it constantly threatens to sink. Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to dismantle the remaining criminal organizations that plague the streets. The application of high dynamic range was simply spot on, delivering the goods in scenes like the chase sequence that featured the “capturing” of the Joker, the blowing up of the hospital or the tower incursion in the finale of The Dark Knight, or the opening airplane sequence, nighttime Gotham City flyover featuring The Bat, the crowded football stadium, or rising from the pit.

Nolan has a lot more on his mind than just action and excitement at blowing stuff up on a big screen, and he proves this repeatedly by letting the well-written script by his brother, Jonathan (with story help from David Goyer), breathe with excellently paced sequences while letting the actors also stretch a bit in their roles.

His story threatens to become tragic, yet the true tragedy of The Dark Knight is what becomes of Harvey Dent, Gotham’s White Knight District Attorney who’s out to put the Mob out of business forever. The Ultra HD Blu-ray release of The Dark Knight Rises - coming as part of the Dark Knight Trilogy set, itself released at the same time as a selection of some seven Nolan titles on the format - affords the epic conclusion stunning video and audio and a strong selection of extras and comes recommended. These are aggressive mixes that utilizes the subwoofer to accentuate its already extended dynamic range. BATMAN BEGINS clearly has the worst transfer and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES clearly has the best, so THE DARK KNIGHT falls somewhere in the middle.
